The company towns began to fade after the coal was gone. Many like San Toy are gone for good. Many of those that remain have crumbling main streets and small populations.
Others such as Haydenville stand as a testimony to the local brick industry that built them.
Restoration projects are underway, and Shawnee was place on the register of historic places in the early nineteen-eighties. Even so, slim fanancial help makes saving these historic sites difficult. |
